This is the owner’s manual as a page you can search, not a PDF you lost. It covers the bumper-pull models: hitching, loading, towing, and the maintenance schedule. Keep the printed copy from delivery with the trailer documents; this page is always the current version.
Before every tow: the five-minute check
- Coupler fully seated on the ball, latch locked, safety pin in.
- Safety chains crossed under the tongue (they cradle the tongue if the coupler fails) and hooked to the vehicle, not the hitch.
- Lights: running, brake, and both turn signals. Two people or a reflection makes it a 30-second job.
- Tires: pressure per the sidewall/VIN plate, no cords or cracks, lug nuts snug.
- Load: tongue weight roughly 10–15% of loaded trailer weight, cargo strapped, nothing loose.
Loading rules
- Never exceed the GVWR on the VIN plate. Payload = GVWR minus the trailer’s curb weight.
- Put roughly 60% of cargo weight forward of the axle centerline — this keeps tongue weight in the safe band and the trailer stable.
- Too little tongue weight causes sway; too much overloads the hitch and unloads the tow vehicle’s front axle. Both are fixable by shifting the load.
- Tie down at four points minimum for machines, pulling in opposition.
Maintenance schedule
Intervals — whichever comes first
| Item | Interval | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Wheel bearings | 12 months / 12,000 mi | Repack or E-Z Lube service; inspect seals |
| Coupler and latch | Every tow | Function check; grease ball contact surface lightly |
| Tires | Monthly + every tow | Pressure, wear pattern, sidewall condition, age (replace at 6 years regardless of tread) |
| Lug nuts | First 50 mi after any wheel-off, then monthly | Torque to spec on the VIN plate |
| Lights and wiring | Every tow | Full function check; dielectric grease on the connector twice a year |
| Torflex fasteners | Annually | Check axle mounting bolts for torque |
| Deck and welds | Annually | Visual inspection; wash-down (see cleaning guide) |
| Breakaway battery (braked models) | Every tow | Charge indicator green; test the switch annually |
- What size hitch ball do I need?
- The coupler size is stamped on the coupler itself — most Rugged bumper-pulls run a 2-inch or 2-5/16-inch ball. Match exactly; a 2-inch coupler on a 1-7/8 ball is how trailers come off.
- Do I need trailer brakes?
- Tandem-axle models ship with electric brakes; your tow vehicle needs a brake controller. Single-axle models under 3,000 lb GVWR do not require brakes in most states — check yours.
